Tristan Rennie just had his 14th birthday and decided to celebrate with a little session at Punker’s. Tristan always has the most beer at his parties than any other teenager I know. Good kid.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Upland Pipeline Skatepark. The City of Upland and Utility Board Shop put together a celebration this past Saturday to honor Stan Hoffman, owner of the original Pipeline, and the Hoffman family for putting Upland on the map.

When Salba talks, people listen.
People from all over the country, along with the legends of skateboarding, came out to honor the Hoffman family. Lance Mountain, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Christian Hosoi, Jay Adams, and Eddie Elguera are just a few of the guys that came out to show their support, not to mention all the Badlanders that hold down the IE on a daily basis.

After some heavy shredding at the park, the party headed over to Utility for a signing and then to The Grove Theatre for a special screening of the new Bones Brigade documentary.
The night ended at Corey Miller’s Timeless Art Gallery for an epic collection of classic Upland art, old relics and photos by Grant Brittian, James Cassimus, Dave Swift, Jim Goodrich, and Chris Ortiz.

The day was amazing beyond words. Skateboarding’s roots are strong in the Badlands and with the out pour of support I witnessed from the community and the number young guns coming up, I don’t see it dying out any time soon.
Peacock posted up some video of the event. Check it out here:
A small selection of the top pool skaters gathered in a backyard in Palmdale, Ca yesterday for the first annual Great Desert Pool Duel Invitational. This was not your conventional skateboard contest by any means. Organized by Billy Runaway and the Palmdale Pool Project crew, it was unlike any other I have seen; in an actual backyard pool that was not built to skate. Like most real pools, this one has it quirks. Kinky and quick in spots and some areas that seem to have perfect skatepark transitions. One difference is that this is quite a large one. I overheard someone say it was somewhere in the 11 foot range.
When we arrived, I didn’t know what to expect. There was a food truck parked on the front lawn with a few people milling about. We walked through the gate and the vibe was pretty mellow. A few guys warming up, sponsor logos well placed around the pool, music trickling out of the corner, and the contest was just about to get started. I took a look at the rider list hanging on the gate and got really excited about what I was about to witness.

The contest started off as 3 man heats, winner goes to the finals and second place went into a losers heat. This all funneled down into some 3 minute, one on one, heats. While battling Tristan Rennie for a spot in the finals, Al Brunelle hung up on a sweeper disaster that took him straight to the drain. It was a scary sight, but everyone took care of him and made sure he got the proper care. He made it safely home, very sore and bummed he couldn’t finish, but doing fine.

As the day went on, you can tell the high desert heat and free Black Star Beer was starting to take a toll on everyone, but the contest charged forward and at the end of the day it was a final that consisted of Tristan Rennie, Kevin Kowalski and Ben Raybourn. When the dust settled, it was 13 year old Rennie in the top spot with Kowalski in second, Raybourn in third, and Jake Reuter taking home 4th place.
The 4th Annual Camtest was held at the infamous Pink Motel this past Saturday. Hundreds of people showed up from all over the country to give back to our skateboard brother, Dave Tuck, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in September. Over $8,000 was raised and all of it went to Dave to help pay for his treatment to beat cancer.

Over the past few years, It’s been pretty regular to get everyone together and skate on Superbowl Sunday, seeing as most of us couldn’t care less about football. This year was no exception. Cam, KB, Robbie and I planned to clean out a new Blue Haven square before we headed out to Ozzie’s. Much to our disappointment, she was less than stellar. At least there was a fun loveseat session.
While Americans are getting ready for what they consider the biggest sporting event of the year, the 54th Super Bowl, the rest of the world couldn’t care less. Well that may be a bit harsh, but from an American perspective it’s easy to overestimate the global appeal of the biggest game in (American) football.
Speaking of football, soccer, i.e. the proper kind of football from a European perspective, far exceeds the Super Bowl in terms of global interest. The FIFA World Cup Final, played every four years to culminate a month-long tournament of 32 nations, really is the biggest game in the world, regularly reaching more than a billion people across the glob, look here to buy all your souvenir https://store.ohpsoccer.com/orlando-fl/.
According to FIFA, last year’s World Cup final between France and Croatia reached an average live audience of 517 million viewers, with more than than 1.1 billion people tuning in over its 90 minutes. The 2019 Super Bowl pales in comparison, having had an average viewership of 98 million in the U.S. plus an estimated 50 to 65 million around the world.

I’ve been sitting on this for a while because the audio was so bad and was pretty much unwatchable. So I decided to do what any professional would do, turn down the audio and turn up the Slayer. Enjoy.
